아이오와주 그린필드에 토네이도가 강타해 4명이 숨지고 최소 36명이 부상을 입었다.
22일 AP통신에 따르면 지난 21일 발생한 토네이도가 그린필드 지역을 휩쓸고 가 주택이 파괴되고 나무가 부러졌다. 또한 도시 외곽에서는 풍력 발전기가 강풍을 견디지 못하고 엿가락처럼 휘어진 채 쓰러졌다.

국립기상청(NWS)는 그린필드에서 풍속이 시속 219~265km인 EF-3 등급의 토네이도가 발생해 해당 지역에 큰 피해를 낸 것을 보고 있다.
그린필드는 인구 2000여 명이 거주하는 곳이다. 그러나 토네이도로 인해 마을 전체가 초토화 돼 사상자가 더욱 늘어날 것으로 보인다.
아이오와주 당국은 주 전역에 재난비상사태를 선포하고 실종자 수색 작업을 벌이고 있다.
