지난 주 미 북서부를 강타한 겨울 폭풍이 캘리포니아주 남서부 일대로 이동하면서 캘리포니아에 1989년 이후 첫 눈폭풍 경보가 내렸다.
지난 23일 LA 등 남가주 지역에 상륙한 겨울 폭풍은 점차 세력을 확장해 저지대 지역에 시속 96~120km/h의 강풍을 동반한 많은 눈을 내렸다.

AP통신에 따르면 LA 북동쪽 산간 지대에는 64cm에서 최대 205cm의 폭설이 내렸고 일부 지역에는 25cm 이상의 비가 내렸다. 남동부 일대에는 약한 토네이도가 발생해 나무들이 쓰러졌고 고속도로 순찰대는 위험에 대비해 5번 프리웨이 일부를 폐쇄했다.

이번 눈폭풍으로 미국 전역에서 1,000건 이상의 항공편이 취소됐고 기업과 주의회들이 문을 닫았으며 대부분의 학교는 휴교령을 내렸다.
캘리포니아를 눈폭풍에 LA 기상학자들은 “희귀한 상황”이라며 “이어 시에라 네바다 전역에 눈사태가 발생할 것”이라고 경고했다.
